Vancity Volvos

Atention 242 owners.

So I just stopped at vancouver auto center on Powell. Thought I'd check out the 82 242 GLT they've got on CL, listed for parts. HOLY CRAP! Car is complete, black leather is EXCELLENT, rest of the interior is EXCELLENT, silver paint looking good, 3 gauge cluster still there, 170k on the clock, last insured in 94. Garage kept.
K-jet pretty done, but it will start.
Unfortunately auto trans.

If anyone is looking for some 242 interior in black, it's there.
$800 for the whole car.
I didn't ask but I'm assuming lost title.

The wife didn't say no. She definitely didn't say yes...

Yeah, the shop owner said clogged fuel distributor and i never looked under the hood. TBH I only stopped to look cause I was driving by. It is a halifax car though, decal in the rear window was still in good shape. B23E huh....

If it is a Canadian market car, it will be a B23E, yes. A very
nice redblock, though perhaps not so much mated to an automatic.

An American market car should be a B21FT. The three gauge panel
will tell the tale without opening any doors -- the turbo will have
a boost gauge in there.

In either case, a clogged fuel distributor is a substantial
problem. K-jet is actually pretty great when sorted out, but can
be a real nightmare if neglected.

Either engine would not be all that well matched to later
redblock EFI, but would shine with a standalone. That is an
entire rabbit warren to get into though.

I do have a few K-jet systems pulled from running cars clogging
up my crawlspace, if anyone gets this car, and wants to save it
(and keep it stock).

It sure looks like a worthy project, we had an '82 242GLT and it
was a fantastic car.

The Snot Rocket is out of winter hibernation. As much fun as the
G80 is in the snow, the holes in the butcheeks and the incredible
amounts of salt on the road are a deadly combo, so I parked it
this year for about six weeks.

Initial repairs are made, to make her safe to operate on the
streets:

She sure is ugly still though.

The blue sheet metal behind the headlights is just riveted in
temporarily until I can get sorted out to paint it properly, then
I'll pull the fender, and bash it all into the proper places.

I picked up a old Craftsman 2hp compressor from craigslist. It
dates back to when Craftsman was good, and it draws 12 amps of
220, so the 2hp is legit. I got a HVLP gun on sale over the
holidays too, so I guess I'm going to paint it myself.

I need to visit my friendly local Lordco on a weekday so they
can scan my paint and mix up a match.

I think I'd like to take you up on your offer of a hood Bruce,
mine is definitely tweaked.

It's probably all for the best. There is a bunch more bodywork to
do and some of it is getting critical. Nothing to lose now.

The battery is on its last legs, but otherwise she is running
excellently.

I finally used the trailer hitch just before the snow started:

The combination scaled in just under 5500lbs. You'd hardly notice
driving it. The noises the turbo made did get
considerably louder though.

An on-topic post from me for once:

Spotted in an alley off W41st a year and a half or so ago,
my favorite Amazon:

Spotted at my local Chevron,
my favorite 140:

Sure, no problem Sim. Just let me know when you want to pick it up. Always nice to be able to justify hanging onto large parts for cars you haven't owned for years :)

Fantastic that you're fixing the car and it will be better than ever.

I'm almost positive a buddy of mine used to own that car. Was half-way serious about buying it at one point.

84 in the Vin means b23e

Sad to hear 2.4 wouldn't work too well on that 242, I've got all that stuff and the ability (financial as well as mechanical) to do that, but that's it. No way I could manage something like ms on my budget. Oh well.
Sure hope somebody can save that thing

If someone wants to save that car I have the '82 242 GLT and a spare M46 that can be used as parts...

Part out whyyyy? :-(

I think it would be easier to just swap in a B230ft and 2.4 with a 240 harness. I always drive past your SE, looks sweet!

Thanks, it definitely looks a lot nicer if either the observer or the car itself are moving. Stationary viewing shows its been through hell . 282,000 miles worth and counting. Rides pretty nice though, just need shocks and struts and the suspension will be completely rebuilt:)

So I spent some quality time in a 240 again over the weekend - probably 30 hours. Navigated in the Thunderbird TSD Rally. My buddy posted a thread here:

TLDR version: It was hairy. Worst conditions in 20 years and 8 cars DNFd, including this guy who had a bad day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF0jjEJfSg4 (go to 4:00, we hung the rear passenger tire over the edge at that same spot!). The 240 felt more like a jetski than a car at times. But we finished respectably.

Hi guys,

I have a ton of leftover Volvo parts since we sold my wife's 850 Turbo. Let me know if anyone is interested in these parts:

- Gunmetal Virgos with RSI center caps (no rubber)
- Set of Perfos with Michelin Harmony 205/55/16
- EST carbon fiber valve cover and throttle body cover for P80s
- iPD billet aluminum oil cap
- Snow Performance methanol injection kit
- Snow Performance methanol flow gauge
- Autometer boost gauge (to 20psi)
- 50ft of vacuum line in different sizes
- 6 bottles of black Plastidip with 2 bottles of graphite metalizer
- 850 Turbo cluster
- 6" turbo bellmouth velocity stack with filter
- Autometer EGT gauge complete with probe and all wiring
- DEI exhaust wrap (50' x 1")

Just shoot me offers, I could really use the space at home. Thanks!
