A 242 the car I’ve wanted for a while now. I found one and bought it on 9/18/19. It’s a 83’ 242GLT Turbo with 105k. The only thing is it’s been sitting since 96 in the same spot. The guy I bought it from has many many old Volvo’s, if anyone can recognize the place don’t mention The Who or where please.

Since then the car is mostly apart all the body panels are off the engine is out; which unfortunately was stuck for sitting so long so I’m doing a full rebuild on the block(more on that later). The only thing in it is the axle and gas tank basically.
The car needs almost everything, I just opened the engine and most of it looks normal. The needs are a fair amount of welding on undercarriage floors and normal places, engine rebuild along with transmission, axle rebuild, new interior, new paint, and everything else cosmetic. I will be doing all of it myself as a great restomod. As of now I’m going to try to build to 250whp to make it a fun show car.

(You may notice all of the old wooden boats in the background, it’s my dads shop; he restores lap strake boats, we are in located in NH)

I found all of the original paper work on the passenger seat which include all factory manuals, dealer paper work, all of previous owners documentation, and most anything you can list.
Fun story the first time I looked at his collection and found this, I realized it didn’t have any keys in it. I looked around a little and nothing, then I rest my hand on the roof in a pile of pine needles and find the key ring under all of the leaves.
I have all of the K-Jet parts for it, but I’m aware the problems associated with it. I’m looking into putting a 405 head on it or maybe a different head, any suggestions welcome.
I drove to Pennsylvania last week which is a 900 mile round trip for the 74-80 round front end for it because I am one of those.

That’s most of the write up, any questions or want more pictures I’ll be uploading more soon as I work.

Looks like it cleaned up pretty well? Congrats on finding and acquiring a buildable 242 on the right side of the country.

Why keep the place secret? People need parts and those cars need rescuing. Otherwise that stuff is going to die where it is. You car almost did.

Gonna need a lot of work but if you put the time into it I?m sure you?ll be pleased with the result. A real shame you?d keep this place secret though because it looks like there are plenty of desireable cars ready to be saved in there. Case in point, that orange wagon in the background of one of those shots. I would take it home in an instant...

Glad to see the car is getting saved, it looks like it was on the edge/over the edge of being scrap metal.

There is a lot of that attitude of keeping the Volvo stashes like that secret. I don't know why, it's not a yard full of Ferraris or Lambos. No one is sneaking in and stealing stuff. I have tried to get to meet a few guys around my area that have them but they are so weird about it. I believe it is hoarding, why else would you just let that stuff rot into the ground. Someday you are going to restore 30 240s? At least let 1 guy with a good rep help get the stuff to those of us who appreciate and treasure the original parts.

I had to go through 3 people to get my 9" rear from an old jagsthatrun car, even though it was laying in the weeds for the last 30 years. I'm not allowed to meet the guy and buy his stuff? I don't get it. Really weird behavior.

Sorry guys, there isn’t much more left that’s salvageable. His last inventory there was 200 cars, there are 122s, 140s, 200s, 700s and some 900s. This place is in Augusta, Maine I believe. I found it on vacation over the summer, it’s a really cool place even if they are all dying. -Louis

+1 I agree it's got to be some sort of strange compulsion. There are 200+ cars and nothing salvageable? I find that hard to believe. I found out after I bought my wagon that the guy was also hoarding several 242s and parts 240s that I would've bought had he told me earlier. Unfortunately lost contact with the guy and haven't been able to reach him over the years through phone or letter. I wish I could remember where it all was...

Hoarders are strange people. I've watched a few episodes of American Pickers where they a find a guy with 50 year stash of car parts and won't sell ONE item at ANY price. Not like the guy is ever going to restore the cars that are laying about. Then if they sell the part is more than it will ever be worth.

Didn't mean to derail your thread in any way with my little rant. You are going to have some impressive before and after pics! Looking forward to seeing the resurrection of your car!

Yeah agreed! Eager to see what you’re starting with here. White 242s look good, not as good as beige but who am I to judge...

Well as an official hoarder of 240 parts. One of the things that is annoying is people ask to buy a part. After thinking about it. I give in. Then you give them a fair value price. Their reaction is ok. I will let you know in a little while. They never call or come back for the part. Sigh...it's a two way thing you know.

Wish you well with the project. Get her rolling.

I know the spot. Weird dude, glad something made it out of his hoard but I'm sure he just doesn't want to be harassed by tire kickers like dl242gt said. If you're not some kid with $45 looking to do a +t and cut the springs in half he's not completely unreachable. Most local Volvo specialists can put you in contact with him.

holy crap I had no idea this existed. And I just drove to Augusta a month ago to get a 960 parts car. Dang I'd like to check that place out tho.
