Hi All
I'm replacing the rear crankshaft oil seal on my 91 240, Am I ok to run the engine in situ with flywheel & clutch back on before refitting gearbox? The reason I'm asking is that, I replaced the seal last week & it leaked worse than ever, so have to do it all again, must have done something wrong!, only thing I can see, is possibly the seal is not in dead square. I've had 2 240's in the past, bought this one to bring back to former glory, it had been neglected in the past, leaked oil when I got it. I did the flame trap a couple of moths ago.

When you install the seal. It may be that the crankshaft has a ridge from the lip of the seal using that surface for all these years. You can install the seal slightly deeper so the lip on the seal is on a fresh surface. Genuine volvo is the best seal to use.

Thanks for those couipler of tips, I was going to hunt for somer shorter bolts, but skts seems a good idea, and I didn't seem to feel a ridge on the crank, but I can see a discolored line so I'll avoid that,, let you all know Sunday, how it turns out!

^^

I use a flat washer under the head of the bolt to keep the bolt from tearing up the chrome on my sockets. The socket it just like having a stack of 30+ washers.
