EV turbobrick - the turbobrick way?

Since I'm still kind of stoked on the idea of building a hybrid/full EV turbobrick, let's have a discussion on how to do it with cheap junkyard/Chinese parts.

Theoretical benchrace budget let's say 2-3k including some Chevy volt batteries, or a DIY laptop battery pack. Tesla stuff is also good but $$$ from what I've seen, in a wagon the spare wheel well should provide plenty of space with decent weight distribution
 
I wonder how much all those components cost. Could be a good way to get great MPG in an old brick and not have range anxiety issues.

Yes I had a look at them a few years ago and the motors went for about 1000? at scrapyards, they came on the latest mercedes a-class back then. Continental used to have a page on the concept with some numbers I believe.

Kl racing and ACM offer a b230 rib belt conversion so assuming the unit has the normal alternator mounting, you'd only be looking for a cooling setup and the electrical system
 
What you have shown for Mercedes isn't truly what we run for EV's.

I understand, however I'm at a more hobbyist angle here, simple parts that bolt together. 80% Vs 99% efficiency won't make the difference on a simple hybrid brick for me. I do the electrical engineering for work, the hobby mechanics in the weekends for fun:)

Here are some places that sell components for the DIY EV community. If you know of any more, please add them.
Most of these places will sell a "kit" with a motor and controller that are matched well. This will give you an idea of what the costs will be if buying new, and using a decent quality product from known suppliers.

The APD drives are neat, but they wouldn’t be the best choice for a ground vehicle like a EV
Volvo.
Their power ratings are with constant air flow (they’re designed for electric planes), and if you want the controller mounted on your roof or bumper, that may be ok.

They also can’t handle a significant amount of regen current, which would be a really big issue in a car EV.
 
Keep that in the other thread, please. This thread seems to be aimed at cobbling OEM stuff into volvos. I will clean this up later.

I mean, the internals of the motor I posted is OEM for a large EV motorcycle company.
If you’re going strictly EV power, you’re going to want a much larger motor. If you want a hybrid setup, the ME1507 is really hard to beat from a cost/ performance/ simplicity perspective.
