Parts List for Truetrac Upgrade

I'm looking to have a truetrac (588) installed in the diff of my 90' Volvo 240. Fairly positive this is a 1031 axle, as it is a later model 240. Also, the axle has 245k miles, so I believe it might make sense to replace the bearings while it is apart.

So far I have the Truetrac 588 from Summit:

And a Dana 30 differential rebuild kit from RockAuto:
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10490784&cc=1287031&pt=2224&jsn=2724

Questions:
- Is this the correct diff rebuild kit for the 1031? (I find it strange that it lists as fitting both the earlier Volvo 240's which came with 1030 axles and the later models which came with 1031 axles.)
- Are there any other parts I will need that I am not considering?

Thanks for the help!

You're going to need the inner pinion bearing and race for a 1031. The kit comes with the smaller 1030 bearing/race. The part numbers are in the thread linked above.

You may want to change the crush sleeve as well. Some folks just squeeze the old one in a vise to make it longer, others will just add a shim to the old one. New style crush sleeves are available from Volvo.

Ben is now selling tone rings for G80 that he says will work on a TrueTrac. Don't forget to shim the sensor.

I welded a tone ring for a 588, heated it to slide over. Machining the old 411 suffix (3 bolt) units was easy. Near impossible on a -588 (6 bolts). Maybe a grinder would do it.
You can do it without pinion bearings, but i am concerned that the kit says axle bearings.
The last one i did i used a tone ring strip from a guy in the midwest. Haven’t tried the ones i bought from ben.

The case of the diff doesn't need much machined off. Maybe a 1-1.5mm radially. You only need to machine in about 1/2 the width of the tone ring, so there should be any issues with the internal gears being in a thin section of the case.

I'll also say that the diff and tone ring were brought to me by someone else, I was just doing the install to help them out. Maybe there's different versions of the strip the BNE offers?

You can also use the angle grinder method to notch the TrueTrac housing directly. Works well, once you get over the essential grossness of the idea.

Feb 2007. Long die grinder and a thick disc.

I bought SteveMD's gold 244 set up for autocross and it has a trutrac you ground like this, maybe this is the same one.

never could get the speedo to read well, found the sensor was ground a mm or two down to exposing some part of the brass internals. replaced it, and shimmed it to recommended specs with feelers through the fill ports, but still wonky after transplanting it into a wagon.

If you go this route, going a little deeper may help prevent problems with the speedo

Yeah, it skeezed me out doing that, so it was pretty shallow.
I wondered where that car went. It was pretty decent the only time i drove it on a tight course. Never got to tweak it or drive it at high speed.
