I also posted this in the Non- performance section

Hey guys. First time posting here and have been stalking the forums for over a year! :oogle:

To give you a quick intro, I have a 07 S40 passion red NA. Mildly modded and I'm on Swedespeed and C30crew.

What I'm doing here is seeking advice on the exact car that I want.
It is my dream (being a Volvo for life guy) to own a 93 240 B230FT. But as you all know that's almost impossible nowadays.
And after looking for a year and a half for that car, it brings me here to look at different options.
I have been searching the forums for those options but I can't seem to settle on any one (or two) choices.

So I'm here for advice.
My goals are:
RELIABLE 250-280 hp (mildly built for the time being to get used to it or wait until the motor blows)(not going to list my mod plans just yet)

From what I gathered... (Correct if wrong)
- B21's are decent motors to make around 225
- if I buy NA B230 or B21 and + T, lower compression (if built right) will make more power
- it's also good to buy factory T though lol

So I think my question is, if one of you all were going to make a build that was around 250hp that's somewhat reliable, which car would you want to go for? I'm talking about full on from the factory motor car no motor swaps.
I find 86's, 87's and 89's around here all the time but have only found 1 93 b230ft in a year and a half.
If I could find a 91, how much of a difference are the bigger rods compared to say an 89, I mean eventually I'll put yoshifab rods or something like that in there anyway if I got an older one but is there any difference In The block?
Also, has anyone documented the power outputs on each motor? As in comparing the blocks and rods to see the power they make?

All there is left for me to do is find that car now. And I would love some advice on where to go now because when I buy it my life will be on here lol.
Cheers everyone!
Chris

240's didnt have turbos after 1985. So you're gonna have to swap something.

Everything you've asked has been answered 100s of times.

You are overthinking this quite a bit.

89-93 240. Turbo the engine in it, or swap one in.

89+ 240. 91+ 7/940 b230ft+aw71. 15g/16t off of an 850/s70. 90+ 740/940 turbo ecu/icu. Buick 3800SC white injectors.
If you are crafty, you can swap all of that onto a junkyard engine at the pnp and not pay extra.

Okay then so let me ask.... Would it be better to buy a NA 240 and + T it? Or swap in a 740 motor (I can get one turbo and all for $450)
Obviously it'd be easier (IMO) to swap in a turbo motor, but what are the actual benefits of having a +T on a NA motor

Will update sig and stuff in a sec! I'm in Louisville KY btw.

And nope, KY doesn't care about a damn thing out here. Don't have to have it tested or anything unless it's an out of state car. Once it's tested, you're good forever

Mind blown. Going to the yard, be back later.

My two cents:
Find the cleanest 90-93 240 you can. It will be N/A, and very likely automatic. Extra points if you find a nice clean 90-93 with 5spd.
Read up on all the many, many, many posts on how to T that b230 engine. If you actually get to the WHP target you're aiming for, you're likely to blow this one up. Call it a "learning experience".

Once you've done that, then start looking for a later model 940T (92-95) that has a good engine with a rusted out body. Pull the engine and associated electronics. Have it ready to swap in should you blow up the first engine.

But spend your time finding that clean 240 to start with. Fixing rust is no fun, and ultimately more expensive than you will expect.

Protip when doing a + b230ft to an earlier car.

Pull a 91+ b230ft.
Unbolt the 13c.
Pull a 15g/16t/13g from an 850 and half ass bolt it up.
Find some buick 3800SC white injectors (36-38lb). Swap them out for the greens.
Pull an 89+ 240 harness and hook to engine. Retain the 940 harness as well.
Plug the turbo computers into the 2.4 harness.

Next Level:
If you find a 16v car. Put the head on the b230. Run it, or sell it. Buy the 16v exhaust manifold separately. Same price.

A 90-93 240 engine will survive for a long time at 250hp.

It would be better to find a body shell you lurv, then make a plan and try and rememeber that a well thought out coordinated plan for the whole car will result in the most fun CAR to drive..
You come and ask like 99% do about hopping up engines..
We don't drive engines around, we drive whole cars...

Motor, turbo, clutch, gearbox, final drive ratio, shocks worth a damn, brakes...hop it up and all those become areas that will certainly need attention.
And every one is treated here as if it is all a mystery and unknowable, and therefore only opinions count and all opinions are all equal....and that if it costs more than $30 at the wrecking yard then it is too much.

I already have devised a plan for what i want and the parts and all and non of it is out of my reach what so ever, it will happen, im just not so sure of when because im having trouble finding the car and what to start with. I want to start with a clean 91-93 240. Im just looking at other options because like i said, i have inly found 2 in the local area in a year and a half which sucks. Which is why i made this post to look at my other options in case i dont get what i want

Then what are you asking anything for if you have a plan and know what you want?

I have a fee different plans depending on the motor I get... Just want to see what most people would go for

And don't get me wrong I don't hate Evo's, way better than Slowbaru's... I actually like them I just would never own one.

The search always continues!
