Hello Guest, welcome to the initial stages of our new platform! You can find some additional information about where we are in the process of migrating the board and setting up our new software here
The "chasing NVH" portion of a project is never fun in itself IMO, but at least it's an indicator that major progress has already been made if this is now the main concern!
I have an upcoming 142E re-shell project that I'm looking forward to, and reading updates from you & others with recently...
So good! The dark gray Virgos are 🤌 - excellent with this paint code!
Word of caution about the transparent blue distributor cap - I remember those from my aircooled VW days, and they were junk back then. Not sure if the one you got is similar but I would watch out for symptoms of poor spark...
Word. Good to hear! Yeah I remember how chalky and white this color can get... Luke (@122power) rescued the '75 that I bought from him and took photos as he was doing the initial buffing to bring back the green.
Agreed, they were not good tires. These Bridgestones were great when they were new, but they have maybe 70k miles on them now. Thinking about this more, that's pretty impressive.
The increased liveliness of the steering over bumps could be related to old tires, I have to consider that...
Unfortunately not bronze - I wish it was that color. It's the pearl white, but it does have the nice orangey "Beachwood" interior. We got it in 2016 from a dealer with a healthy markdown. It was about 1 year old but had never been sold. There were a few like that in the LA area to pick from. I...
I can't offer much trans info, but I do have the same car. 2015 V60 Cross Country T5. 5-cyl w/ 6-spd auto, 120k miles. When cold it shifts a tiny bit abruptly but smooths out when warm. Anyway regarding this car in general, maybe we can compare notes!
I'm going to do the timing belt, water...
Nope, the housing orientation does not affect balance whatsoever.
On turbochargers, balancing is done to the wheels first as individual components. So before assembly the compressor wheel is balanced on its own and likewise with the turbine wheel. The wheels are spun up on special balancing...
OP - How bad is the manifold crack? Pics?
Cast iron OE manifolds and OE turbine housings can run for a long time safely with cracks. Eventually they can start breaking up and causing turbine wheel damage, but that's usually in highly progressed cases.
All of this talk of manifolds could be...
You bet, no prob.
Post photos here of your turbo innards if you can. I'll let you know if I spot anything suspicious.
BTW for the record I'm not saying that rebuild video was terrible... the guy mostly did OK for a shadetree DIY job. But there is a lot more to it that is not common knowledge.
A few notes on that 2-part rebuild video:
He's a little confused about the names of components - intake side is compressor, exhaust side is turbine. The thing he calls "the shield" is the assembly of thrust bearing (stationary) & thrust collar (rotating)
His compressor housing shows clear...
