Checked out a few threads first but I'm not satisfied yet. Does anybody know of a good thread on transmission swaps (EDIT: just replacing auto with auto), particularly a noob friendly one?

And if ya feel like answering any of these other questions then hell yea:

-Does anybody happen to know if the accumulator mod works on AW72L trannys?
-Besides gaskets and fluid is there anything else that I should be buying or doing while I have the transmission out of the car?
I have never done a tranny swap so I'm a bit apprehensive and would love for any advice at all.

Cheers and thanks

Swap to manual? Or simply replace the one you have? You probably want to decide which exact trans you want and then look or ask for detailed info specific to that.
I would replace rear main seal on the motor while the trans is out.

sorry, I shouldve been more explicit. I'm replacing, so going from AWwhatever is on it already to an AW72L (off a 740 GLE). I was going to try manual swapping but I'm also planning on adding horsepower and so I wanna stick with the auto trans as Ive heard they can handle more power. And I am pretty much getting the new auto trans for free so might as well save the money.

thanks for the response, ill look into rear main seal.

"L" is not usually recommended on Turbo but some run them. That trans is out of 16V motor so there may be some surprises in how it's going to feel due to likely different gearing.
Verify the yoke size first- you could have a problem connecting the driveshaft.

Don't swap a 72L in, stay with a 71 or 71L.

Personally, I have no issues with a 71L on my wagon.

Yes, the accumulator mod will work on the 72L as well.

If you are careful, you don't need a new gasket, plus the gaskets are not easy to find by themselves.

I did my first auto tranny swap (and accumalator mod) this past summer. Pay good attention to the lineup of the timing mark on the flexplateamagig... I marked mine wrong and took me a lot of reading to get it right for lh2.4.

The gasket you can find by searching Toyota sites, they used the same AW boxes. I bought one but didn't end up needing it.

gotcha, whats wrong with the 72L?

also even though it is easier on 7 series than 2 series get like 2-3 feet of extensions to get those upper bell housing bolts n such!

I found I could reach them by hooking two open end wrenches to one another and holding them together with with a bit of duct tape. It results in a lever arm just long enough to break the bolts loose and not scratch my hand up on all the crap hanging out back there. A bit easier to deal with than a few feet of extensions.

a bit off topic, but can the accumulator mod be done without dropping the transmission? All the tutorials show it being done with trans out, but wouldn't dropping the pan, pulling out filter, and then dropping the valve body work, if a giant PITA?
