940 My Catalytic Converter was just stolen.

I've never seen more postulating over an exhaust system before.

Seriously. Someone find this guy a local shop that he isn't wary of.

The. Entire. Exhaust. On my 83 was welded together by strangers :e-shrug:

It's been sitting for over ten years but I bet that my 275lb ass could still swing from it.

Sorry to hear about your run-in with dirtbag thieves. I can *almost* feel your pain.

Holy crap. I come here after a few months of smooth operation to complain about my completely plugged cat, only to see someone with a similar problem in worse shape. I wanted to clean it, but the studs broke off and it looks like they are welded to the flange so I can't beat or press the remains out. That's fine, because I think I've already found a suitable aftermarket part. This was a truly spectacular failure. It is so plugged that all the exhaust was coming out of the engine and turbo, not the tailpipe. The exhaust was coming out of the front of the car and smelled like someone vaporizing a nickel.
I still have a question, though. Have any of you sold your dead cats for scrap? What does an OE 940 turbo cat fetch? For clarification, I'm talking about the one from my car. I don't have Solo's cat here.

Scrap guys have paid $100 for a cat. Sometimes just the shell can be worth something. $100 should cover your tweak habit for the night.

I've heard Prius cats have been a commonly stolen item. There was an article in where a guy fabricated a large shield for protection after his $1,500 Prius cat was stolen for the second time.

I've seen trucks been hit; they are easy to crawl under.

My tweak habit is driving that brick, but yes it would cover the expense. It sucks that I have to wait a few days for a cat, still. Brick withdrawal is brutal. I guess it's better than continuing to drive and finishing off the gaskets and turbo while sitting in an exhaust filled cab.

Do you own a drill? I have sold cats from 940's for $125 each, no smog here ......where's my sawsall.

The new catalytic converter made the turbo stop smoking and the seals stop spitting oil, but my pain did not end there.
This started as an exhaust manifold replacement. That was a disaster in itself. I had to bash the old, severely cracked manifold with a hammer a few dozen times to free the turbo. Once I did, the outlet broke off of the manifold. It looked like it had been busted off before and thermosteeled together, or was just so severely corroded that the cast iron had disintegrated into chunks.
Once I got it back together, I had bad exhaust smell in the cab and the plugged catalytic converter revealed itself. Even if the new cat fixed the worst of it, there was still a bad exhaust smell in the cab at idle, general poor idling, and at times both of the fuel trim too rich/lean codes. I followed the soot to the turbo/downpipe flange, which made the source of the error codes obvious. The problem turned out to be that the bottom stud had somehow bent, preventing the flange from entirely encompassing the tube.
I applied some penetrant and tried the two-nut removal method, but the stud broke off AT THE THREADS without much force. I now have the turbo off the car again, penetrant pooled in the recess with the busted stud. I'm no religious man, but I'm praying that the remains of that stud will just drop out onto the wastegate once I start drilling. I really don't want to do a drill and crush on it, getting metal shavings all over the place. I ripped open a hard drive for magnets to hopefully mitigate that problem if it comes to that. And I damn sure don't want to helicoil it if I ruin the threads with drilling.
How could something that has made me so happy drive me to these depths of despair? This is just ridiculous.
Update: sprayed more penetrant, and some of it sunk through the threads. All might not be lost. My clumsy series of center punch holes looks like it's pretty close to the middle too.

interesting, you should start a thread about it in 'maintenance and nonperformance'

It's still a brick in its current state, just in terms of masonry instead of automobiles.
Seriously though, I really should move that post to a new thread. And donate so I can attach pictures of the carnage. I have such sights to show you.

Thank you for all of your helpful, useful, and informative comments. My apologies. I haven't been able to post here in quite awhile. I had a local shop wield on a generic cat and install a new bosch direct fit o2 sensor. I have a new downpipe and bosal cat on hand now. I've bigger problems, but as long as I may draw breath and witness another day, then I can see that things are not all that bad. May need another 940 b230fd engine? Anyone have one for sale? ship or pickup? Thank you.
