New 740 owner with some performance questions...

Hi to all. A little info on myself I have owned several cars over the years. MostlyToyotas like the MKI MR2 and AE86. I have done turbo conversions on several. Growing up a bit I purchased a 1999 Audi A4 1.8t quatro that is now running a GT3071R. Having hit a deer the car needs painted and I am swapping in a completely built block as well and aiming for 350AWHP at least.

Knowing my car is going to be down for a bit I purchased a 1990 740 to hold me over. The car is not in the best shape physically but mechanically it runs a like a dream with its 202xxx miles. So much that I am actually surprised by its perfrmance for being old and as heavy as it is. It does need struts and shocks. Probably new springs as well since if handles like a fish out of water. The other thing is I could see how adding some performance to it would make things a lil more lively. Being the wrench turner I am I have a small collection of turbos that I have rebuilt over the years including a 19T, 16g, big 16g, 20g, GT2560R, GT2860 (GT2860RS without ball bearings) GT2554, GTX2867R, and even some bigger turbos. My point is that I would like to match a turbo up to the car in a fashion that i would not require the block to be opened but still make some hp. I am thinking the 19T would be perfect.

The other issue is I don't know what type of fuel management is required. I have run MegaSquirts but if I can stay away from them I will. I don't know fuel injector size or what will work for this make and model. I don't know what AFM voltage is either so I am curious of that as well. What RPM limits a healthy block has? What hp limits a healthy Auto has (rumored the trans is similiar to a Toyota trans?) How much hp will the turbo manifold hold before needing swapped?

Basically I would like to keep the build as cheap as possible. If I could get down a healthy 250rwhp I think that would be lots of fun.

Before it is said I have searched most of my questions and I have found different answers. This is why I have bundled most of my questions together in hopes to get specific answers related to all topics. Also any other related nuggets of info I would be greatful for as well.

Thanks in advance

Well Hello, Zandrew and welcome to the forum.

I can't really help you directly with your questions but I do have some good advice that will get you there. You have stated some experience turning wrenches and building other projects so I would encourage you to do what I did. Everything you need to know and more has been covered in many of the well written threads and stickies. I know you stated that you did some searches but really, you need to keep researching. Its all there. I think many of the members of this forum grow a little weary of answering the same questions time and time again and for good reason.

I spent about 6 months reading threads every day for a couple of hours before I even started looking for a donor car for my 740T project. I STILL spend an hour or so almost every night looking through old threads in both this forum and Maintenance/Non-performance. Look in the archives and the symposium sections of this board. Also, the project threads hold a wealth of chronologically documented steps doing the exact same thing you aspire to.

We're not trying to be rude or lazy, its just that its all there. Then, when you have a specific question that shows you've done a little homework on your own, others will usually chime right in with helpful answers. This is a great place to pick up the knowledge and lessons learned the hard way from people that have gone down that road.

So, put on a pot of coffee and start digging. I like to use Google rather than the search tool on this forum so I just Google turbobricks (your search criteria here). Does a much better job in my opinion.

Best wishes and luck with your hunting.

Eric

Yup. It weighs similar to your audi. Maybe even less.

19T with the mods (CAM, injectors, running MS, Bigger IC, exhaust, etc) will get you more than 250whp. Guys here have proven that.

The transmission IS the same one Toyota used. If you have a turbo car, it's an AW71. In good shape it's plenty strong for your goals, but do the accumulator mod (search) to firm up the shifts and reduce wear.

Good luck. Welcome to the club. You enter but can't ever leave when you see the faces on your friends in their new cars that can't keep up with a 24 year old beater.

Over the years I've found that everything should be done in moderation. This includes performance modifications. Also, I've found that I spend so much time keeping up with problems with my 88 765 turbo to worry about many modifications. When I first got the car I installed a 19mm rear stabilizer bar (from an 87 760 sedan) and a 24mm front stabilizer bar (from a 92 960).

To get you started, something you could do on a Sunday is put in your 19T (you might need to clock it and/or take a dremel to it first) and install an MBC tuned conservatively (8psi) and see how you like it before you open your beater up for heavy work.

Billy Tourings and IPD heavy duty springs will work wonderfully and give the proper handling.

+1 on the iPd springs, but after 2 years on the iPd springs and Touring combo, I can safely say I wish I had just bought the damn HD shocks. Every bump in the road is a jiggle through the cabin.

solid info here,

i think the 19t is a perfect dd turbo!

provides enough power, shouldnt break too much, and ton of fun not to mention itll still spool quickly

theres a list from a swede to make 300whp interesting article if i can find it..
