Weird blinker issue

85 240 turbo, started a month or so back but i havent used the car much. Heres what happens, get random relay clicking (speed of a blinker relay with a bulb out, ie double speed) and the blinkers wouldnt work. Then randomly they would work again all the while i get random clicking of the relay. Now ill admit i havent taken the center console out to check which relay it is but deductive reasoning says it is the blinker relay because if i use my blinkers while its its double clicking it returns to normal blinker speed and sometimes shortly after wont double click for a little while then comes back. Last driver it literally clicked the whole time. I know normal issues would have answers such as clean/replace fuses but its getting power, just too often. Advice is welcome. Ill be digging into it soon but its just been hot and humid as hell here in the south and working 40hr weeks outdoors doesnt add to my motivation but i need to get it sorted to sell the car.

Sounds like the relay may be on the fritz... I'm not sure not sure where it is in your 240 but it should be part number 9442468 (according to Dave Barton's site)

Either way, I just took mine out and apart and cleaned the contacts, that might do the trick for you. You should look at the solder joints and make sure that none of them have cracked. If they have you can reflow the solder to repair them.

Good advice, ill try it out. Now the weird part i forgot to mention, when its doing its double clicking when the blinkers arent on, the lights aren't flashing

Huh, that's definitely odd... could it be that the wiring between the bulbs and the relays has broken down? As you said, if it's similar to a bulb out sound, you may be getting a break in the line as the car heats, cools, etc.? So it could be that the connection is breaking within the relay or somewhere between relay and bulbs.

Just my guess - I'm just getting to know how the electrical systems in cars work, so take my advice with a grain of salt :p

This is a clue that the trouble is in the column switch. The electronic relay is very sensitive on the trigger input. So sensitive, that a bit of dirt combined with humidity and old grease can form enough of a conductive path across the insulating part of the column switch and trigger it. The cure is to remove the switch and wash it out with solvent.

I guess just enough juice to cause the relay to click but not enough to cause the light to blink?
